Protecting Voices, Preventing Harm: Your role as a Mandatory Reporter in MANE Prevention
Welcome back! Every training session in this platform has reinforced a central theme: the empowerment of member rights and the responsibilities we carry as professionals in Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS). Some of these responsibilities are guided by ethical and moral imperatives, while others come with clear legal mandates. In this session, we focus on one of the most fundamental and non-negotiable duties we hold: safeguarding individuals from Mistreatment, Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation (MANE) and fulfilling our legal obligation to report any suspicion of these violations.
Ensuring the safety and well-being of those we serve is not just a best practice—it is a requirement. Failing to recognize or report MANE can have devastating consequences for vulnerable individuals and can lead to legal repercussions for professionals who fail to act. Understanding our role as Mandatory Reporters is essential to maintaining the integrity of the HCBS system and ensuring that every individual receives care that is free from harm.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will:
- Clearly understand the definitions and categories of MANE.
- Recognize their legal and ethical responsibilities as Mandatory Reporters.
- Identify the signs and indicators of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
- Learn the proper procedures for reporting suspected MANE incidents.
- Ensure compliance with both federal and state reporting laws to protect individuals and uphold accountability.
This training is not just about policies and procedures—it is about protecting lives, preventing harm, and fostering a culture where safety and dignity come first.
